Emerging story
Pages and accounts on Facebook and TikTok have recently circulated a video claiming to show the effects of the destruction caused by the Russian bombing of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the widely circulated claim and discovered it to be misleading, as the video depicting the aftermath of the Beirut port explosion was old and published in August 2020.
On August 4, 2020, tons of ammonium nitrate stored in port warehouses exploded, causing damage to wheat and maize grain silos. The explosion caused extensive destruction and damaged buildings up to 20 kilometers away from the port.
The video went viral amid tensions between Russian and Ukrainian forces in a number of areas, including Kharkiv, which has recently been targeted by Russian bombing.
