No, the Russia-Announced Ceasefire Only Covers 5 Ukrainian Cities
The Claim
Russia announced a statewide ceasefire across Ukraine.
Emerging story
Facebook users have recently shared news alleging that Russia had announced a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s team investigated the circulated claim and found it misleading. To date, Russia has not declared a comprehensive cease-fire throughout Ukraine. Instead, it did announce Monday, March 7, a limited ceasefire covering five cities, including the capital Kyiv. Following a third round of talks with Ukrainian officials, the ceasefire begins today, March 8, to aid in the evacuation of civilians.
Russia announced a limited ceasefire in the Mariupol and Volnovakha regions on Saturday, 5 March, with news circulating that Ukraine accused Russia of disrupting civilians’ exit by targeting a number of transport operating through humanitarian corridors. On the other hand, Russia accused the Ukrainian forces of taking advantage of the ceasefire in the two regions to enhance their capabilities.
