Emerging story
Social media users on Facebook and Twitter have recently circulated a video claiming that Russian forces had built a pontoon bridge, allowing their tanks and military vehicles to cross a river in Ukraine after the Ukrainian army destroyed land bridges to slow the advance of Russian troops.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulated claim and discovered it to be misleading. The video is from June 20, 2017, when military forces built a pontoon bridge to transport tanks across the river during NATO exercises in Lithuania.
It went viral on social media after Ukraine announced that it was destroying bridges in order to slow the advance of Russian troops during the Russian war on Ukraine, which began on Feb. 24.
