Social media users shared a photo purportedly showing the Statue of Liberty in New York City covered in the colors of the Ukrainian flag in solidarity with Ukraine.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar's team discovered that the circulating claim is misleading, because the photo depicts a resin replica of France's Statue of Liberty. On Feb. 28, 2022, a Ukrainian website reported that the Statue of Liberty in France had become "Ukrainian".
On the same day, the photo was also tweeted by Colmar's official Twitter account.
The replica in the circulating claim was sculpted to commemorate the sculptor Auguste Batholdi, who was born in Colmar, on his 100th birthday.
