Emerging story
A photo purportedly of thousands of Americans volunteering to fight Russian forces in Ukraine has recently circulated among news outlets and social media users.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar looked into the circulating and found it was misleading. The picture shows Ukrainian volunteers, not American volunteers, willing to fight against Russian forces in Ukraine. The image was taken from a Sky News report published on February 26, 2022. It depicts Dnipro, southeastern Ukraine residents, who responded to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's call to make firebombs and volunteer for the Ukrainian army.
According to the AP, a recruitment center for Americans who want to join the fight for Ukraine has been established at the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington.
"The U.S. government discourages Americans from going to fight in Ukraine, which raises legal and national security issues," the Associated Press added.
According to Ukrainian Defense Attaché Borys Kremenetskyi, "Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington has received at least 6,000 requests for volunteers, the vast majority of whom are American citizens."
