Emerging story
Facebook and Twitter users have recently shared a claim alleging that The Washington Post published an article that U.S. president Biden had issued a decree banning the flying of military aircraft over Syria’s airspace. The decision, according to the alleged claim, takes effect in the next few days.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s team investigated the circulated claim and found it fake. The claim is made up; U.S. president Biden did not issue a decision or decree banning military aircraft from flying over Syria’s airspace. There is no evidence that the alleged news was published in either the American newspaper or any other reliable news outlet.
Washington hosted a meeting with 11 countries, in addition to EU and Arab League representatives. Per a statement published via the U.S. Embassy Damascus official Facebook account, the meeting discussed “advancing a political settlement in Syria, expanding access to life-saving humanitarian aid, and holding the Assad regime accountable for atrocities.” The statement did not refer to the imposition of a no-fly zone on military aircraft in Syria.
During the past 10 years, the United States called for a ban on aircraft flying over the Syrian airspace following accusations of the use of chemical weapons and the bombing of populated areas by the Syrian regime forces. However, this push was unsuccessful.
