Two photos depict Turkish shelling of the city of Duhok, Iraq.

Emerging story

Social media users recently circulated two photos purporting to show Turkish shelling of the city of Duhok in Iraq's Kurdistan Region.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the circulating claim and discovered it to be misleading. The photos are old and do not show a  Turkish shelling of the city of Duhok in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The first photo was published in April 2020, depicting a bombardment in Iraq's Kurdistan region.

The second photo was published on Jan. 1, 2021. It depicts a Turkish bombardment targeting areas of Iraqi Kurdistan on Dec. 31, 2020.

There have been no recent reports of Turkish shelling targeting regions in Iraqi Kurdistan. On Sunday, March 13, Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed responsibility for a missile attack on Erbil, the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region.
