In March 2019, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced their recapture of the town of Al Baghouz, following airstrikes and raids on ISIS strongholds, backed by the United States. It ended with the surrender of ISIS fighters and the departure of civilians.

The widely circulated story coincided with news of an ISIS raid in the Syrian countryside of Homs, which killed members of Iraqi and Lebanese Hezbollah, including a leader of the Iraqi branch of the party.
