Social media users recently circulated a photo purporting to show a group of Ethiopian citizens who had recently arrived in Ethiopia after being detained in Saudi Arabia.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating photo and discovered it to be misleading, as it was taken and published in November 2020. It depicts the return of 295 Ethiopian citizens who were deported from Saudi Arabia after illegally entering the country.
Ethiopia announced in January 2021 that it had reached an agreement with Saudi Arabia to release 40,000 of its citizens who were detained in Saudi Arabia, an average of 1000 citizens per day.
