Emerging story

A graphic video of Ukrainian soldiers killing Chechen civilians in 1999 is circulating on social media. It was shared by some users to justify Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be false. A relevant keyword search revealed that the clip is not real and is from the film called “The Search.” The movie was directed by French director Michel Hazanavicius and was released in 2014. It is based on several storylines that began with Russia's invasion of Chechnya in 1999. The film has been uploaded to YouTube and can be seen here in March 2021, as shown below.
