The Claim

This is a screenshot of a BBC news report on Russia with a text banner that says: “Footage of police violently suppressing anti-war protests." In addition to a subheadline reading: “This proves Russia is not a true democracy.”

Emerging story

Social media users have circulated an image claiming to be a screenshot of a BBC news report on Russia. The alleged screenshot shows the BBC anchor Huw Edwards with a chyron reading: “BREAKING NEWS: Footage of police violently suppressing anti-war protests. This proves Russia is not a true democracy.”

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be fake. The screenshot was digitally altered to add the fabricated chyron.

The claim was not based on any reliable sources. Also, our team did not find the alleged statement on BBC’s website or social media pages. And no news reports have mentioned that BBC aired such a headline.

Using Google Image Reverse Search, our team has found the original image attached to an article published by The Guardian in 2015 with a title reading: “BBC could be forced to change time of 10pm news programme.” The authentic image depicts Huw Edwards in the newsroom but does not feature any chyron or headline.
