Emerging story
Social media users have circulated an image claiming that it is a screenshot of a CNN tweet wrongly claiming that a Serbian hotel is in Ukraine.
The alleged CNN tweet says the picture depicts the remains of the once-famous Ukrainian resort called “Mir” or “Peace” after an air attack by Russian bombers.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be fake. CNN did not wrongly caption the Serbian hotel as a Ukrainian hotel resort.
Using keywords featured on the alleged CNN tweet, our team could not find any tweet by CNN Breaking News related to a Serbian hotel. And analyzing the tweet’s text, we noticed that there are problems of capitalization for the words “Ukrainian” and “Russian,” in addition to other grammatical mistakes.
Using Google Image Reverse Search, we found other photos of the Mir hotel uploaded shared online in 2010, and they show the building as it is in the image included in the alleged CNN tweet. According to the blog that posted the pictures, the hotel is near Zvonci village in Serbia.
Other pictures of the Mir hotel were also posted on websites and can be seen on some YouTube videos. Shutterstock has uploaded other images of the Serbian hotel with a caption reading: “Old, abandoned, ruined hotel building, villas, and houses next to the road in the misty mountain covered by colorful red trees.”
Based on these findings, there is no evidence CNN has miscaptioned a Serbian hotel as being in Ukraine during their media coverage of the Russian war on Ukraine. The screenshot is fabricated.
Our team has already debunked many screenshots and images attributed to CNN, claiming they are related to their news reports and media coverage of many issues.
