Emerging story
Social media users and pages have circulated posts claiming that Montreal's mayor has renamed the avenue in front of the Russian consulate in Montreal “Avenue Zelensky” to show support for Ukraine after the Russian war on the country.
Users have shared a photo of the "Avenue Zelensky" sign captured in the street in front of a building in their posts. The Russian flag can also be seen in the image's background.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be fake. Montreal's mayor did not rename an avenue after the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.
Using Google Image Reverse Search, our team has found that a satirical TV show discussing current affairs on Radio-Canada called “Infoman” has first tweeted the image on their official Twitter account on March 10, 2020.
The Twitter account posted the picture with a caption in French reading: “A beautiful moment captured.”
Our team has looked up the edition of the show using keywords and discovered that the show host by Jean-René Dufort has installed the “Avenue Zelensky” street sign in Avenue du Musée for the filming of the show.
Jean-René Dufort spoke about a bar scrapping “Putin” from its name. He said during the show, before putting the “Avenue Zelensky” sign on a fence: “I thought this was an excellent idea. So I did the same with the tiny piece of the Avenue du Musée where the Russian consulate in Montreal is located.” But there is no evidence that Montreal’s city council renamed Avenue du Musée.
