Several social media users have circulated a photo purporting to show the new map of Ukraine. The footage has been broadcast on Polish television, showing Poland, Hungary, and Romania sharing some border cities with Ukraine.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating photo and found it to be misleading. The photo dates back to 2014. It is a screenshot from a video clip shown on Polish television. At the time, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the Russian State Duma Speaker, had requested a referendum to annex five Ukrainian cities to Poland.
The House of Representatives of the Russian Federal Assembly, known as the State Duma, had also submitted a proposal to Hungary and Romania to annex the states of Zakarpattia and Chernivtsi at the time.
The allegation circulates in the midst of ongoing war in Ukraine, which began on February 24.
