Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The footage is old and was posted to YouTube in 2021.
Using Keywords on Facebook Search, our team has found the video uploaded online in December 2021. The video depicts Algerian Mouloudia Saida football team players crying after their colleague Sofiane Loukar passed away because of a heart attack during a football match against the Oran Association Football Club.
We also found the same video posted on YouTube on December 25, 2022, entitled: “Mouloudia Saida captain Loukar Sofiane passed away at El Habib Stadium.”
The claim started to circulate after the Algerian national team lost the qualification for the World Cup in Qatar 2022. Based on our investigation, this circulated video is old and unrelated to the last Algeria-Cameroon football match.
It is also worth mentioning that the Algerian Football Federation has appealed to the world governing body FIFA citing “scandalous arbitration that led to the result.” The federation has requested the match to be replayed amid many complaints related to the refereeing decisions.
