Emerging story
Social media users have circulated an image claiming it depicts a Kenyan building in Nairobi, recently lit with Ukrainian flag colors in solidarity with the country.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be fake. The image was edited.
The users shared the picture that depicts the Kenyatta International Convention Center in Nairobi, Kenya claiming that the building was lit with Ukrainian flag colors in solidarity with Ukraine.
Using Google Image Reverse Search, our team has found the original image of the building without the Ukrainian flag colors circulating online since 2016. An article on The Association Magazine website posted the picture on June 9, 2016.
Our team has also found the original image, taken from the same angle, posted on the Nairobi Summit website, attached to an article about the schedule of the Summit, which took place in the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC).
Using the keywords “Nairobi,” “KICC,” “Solidarity,” and “Ukraine,” we did not find any such photo of the Kenyatta International Convention Center lit up in Ukraine flag colors. Also, no reliable sources or Kenyan government official websites posted the alleged picture in solidarity with Ukraine.
Based on our investigation, the claim is fake. We already have debunked claims about a photo purportedly showing the Statue of Liberty in New York City covered in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, and another picture claiming the avenue leading to the Russian consulate in Montreal was renamed After the Ukrainian president in solidarity with Ukraine.
