Old and Digitally Altered Photos Claimed To Show Unchanging Sea Levels
The Claim
Two photos taken 80 years apart prove that sea levels have not changed.
Emerging story
A meme purporting to show unchanging sea levels is widely circulating on social media.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has investigated the circulating claim and found it to be fake. By cropping the images and doing a reverse image check, the images can be traced to different website.
The photo claimed to be 80 years old is, in fact, a digitally altered image. The original was taken circa 2008, which is the earliest date we found during the search. An image uploaded on Flickr in 2008 matches with the digitally altered image claimed to be from 80 years ago.
The two photos show the people standing in the same location and with the exact same postures.
The photo claimed to be from “today,” was traced to two websites. One had the image uploaded in 2016, and the other had it uploaded back in 2012, which proves that the image is not recent.
Misbar’s team also conducted research regarding the ways of measuring sea levels. Photographs are not a reliable method.
