Claims that Syria will save Lebanon from bankruptcy and provide financial and food assistance have been circulating on Facebook.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be false, as Syria has not stated that it will aid Lebanon. Furthermore, no credible news source reported the story.
The allegations arose after the Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister stated on Al Jadeed TV that Lebanon's central bank is bankrupt.
However, Riad Salameh, the governor of Lebanon's central bank, has denied reports that the central bank is bankrupt.
According to the United Nations, Syria has been in an economic and living crisis for years, with 14.6 million Syrians in need of humanitarian assistance and 12 million people in need of food assistance.
