A screenshot shows former US President Donald Trump thanking Elon Musk for restoring his access to Twitter following the ban imposed following Musk's purchase of Twitter.
Recently, social media users shared a screenshot purportedly showing a Trump tweet thanking Elon Musk for bringing back him to Twitter.
Misbar investigated the circulating screenshot and found it to be fabricated.
Is Donald Trump on Twitter?
Donald Trump's Twitter account has been permanently suspended due to a violation of Twitter rules since January 2021. Twitter stated that the account was suspended due to the risk of further incitement of violence after the 2021 United States Capitol attack.
Elon Musk Makes $41.39 Billion Offer to Buy Twitter
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, became Twitter's largest individual shareholder with a nearly $3 billion stake and proposed purchasing the social media company, stating that it needed to be taken private in order to grow and become a platform for free speech.
While Musk's attempt to take over Twitter has so far failed, some social media users have speculated on what Twitter might look like if he had complete control. This included former President Donald Trump, who had been permanently banned from the service.
Musk does not have the authority to reinstate Trump or any other account because Twitter has not yet accepted Musk's offer.
Elon Musk’s Tweets about Freedom of Speech
Musk's investment in the site has sparked debate among Twitter users. In a poll, he asked his followers if Twitter strictly adheres to free speech. In another tweet, he mentioned that Twitter serves as a de facto public town square, and that failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy.
However, Misbar's team found no evidence that Elon Musk would restore Trump's account if he owned Twitter.
