Emerging story
Social media accounts and pages have recently circulated images purporting to show US military planes that recently landed in Poland carrying weapons and equipment for the Ukrainian army.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The images circulating do not depict U.S. planes that recently landed in Poland. They are old and predate the Russian war on Ukraine. The photos show U.S. planes’ arrival at Boryspil International Airport in Kyiv, on January 25, 2022, before the Russian invasion. The planes were carrying U.S. military aid for Ukraine.
U.S. Announces Additional Aid to Ukraine
According to news outlets, the United States authorized “another $800 million security package and an additional $500 million in direct economic assistance to Ukraine as its military fights off a renewed Russian assault.”
In a statement focusing on U.S. measures related to the Ukrainian issue, Joe Biden stated that he would ask Congress for more funding for weapons and ammunition provided to Ukraine. He also mentioned that the funds currently available to support Kyiv are nearly depleted.
Since the beginning of Russia's war on Ukraine, the United States has increased its military aid to more than three billion dollars.
Russian War on Ukraine
Russia declared war on Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Economic sanctions were imposed in response to Russia's decision. To end the war, Russia wanted Kyiv to abandon plans to join NATO and remain neutral. Kyiv has considered this as an undermining of its sovereignty.
