The Claim

Visuals depict an explosion in a Madrid apartment building on May 6, 2022.

Emerging story

Websites and social media users across the MENA region have recently circulated footage purporting to show the explosion that occurred on May 6, 2022, in an apartment building in Madrid, Spain.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar's investigation revealed that the claim is misleading, as the visuals circulating are not from the recent explosion in Madrid.

2021 January Explosion

According to a Spanish website, the visuals circulating recently are from an explosion in a Catholic Church building on Cal Toledo Street in downtown Madrid in January 2021. The explosion, according to reports at the time, was caused by a gas leak in the building, killing four people and injuring several others.

Recent Madrid Explosion

The visuals went viral after an explosion rocked a four-story residential building in Madrid, killing two and injuring 18. Firefighters continued their search for additional victims, while Madrid police used drones to inspect the building from above.
The explosion also severely damaged the building and nearby cars.

Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the explosion, but are investigating the possibility of a natural gas leak.
