Emerging story
Social media users across the MENA region have been circulating news claiming that the Ministry of Communications and Informatics of Libya has decided to ban the TikTok app due to inappropriate content.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulated claim and discovered it to be fake. The relevant entities and institutions, whether under the Government of National Unity led by Abdulhamid Dbeibah or the government in charge of the House of Representatives led by Fathi Bashagha, did not declare TikTok banned in Libya's capital, Tripoli.
Libyan Government in Tripoli
Libya's parliament voted on February 10 to give Fathi Bashagha confidence to form a new government, after withdrawing confidence from Abdulhamid Dbeibah's The Government of National Unity.
Fathi Bashagha's government took the oath of office in front of the Tobruk-based Parliament on March 3. Since then, the government led by Bashagha has remained in Tripoli, while the Government of National Unity continues to run the headquarters of Libyan ministries.
