Emerging story
Social media users across the MENA region have recently circulated a photo purporting to show protests in Iran against the backdrop of the government's recently imposed spike in food prices.
Photo Description: The photo being circulated online.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and discovered it to be misleading. The photo does not depict the recent Iranian protests. The photo is older than claimed as it was previously published on July 9, 2009, in Tehran, following unrest during the disputed presidential election. The protesters were met with violence and tear gas by the Iranian security forces.
2009 Iranian Protests
In June 2009, Iran was troubled by what protesters saw as a manipulation of the presidential election results. Demonstrations had been attacked by Iranian security forces, and a number of heads of state and human rights organizations had condemned the attacks.
2022 Iranian Protests
Recently, many Iranian cities have been holding protests in rejection of the government's decision to raise the price of several food products. Iran's President, Ebrahim Raisi, has announced measures, which according to him, are aimed at countering economic pressures in the country, including increased prices for food products and chicken.
