An image purporting to show the moon as a basketball went viral recently. Twitter users claim the picture depicts the real-life moon captured from an angle that made it look like a basketball.
Misbarβs Analysis
Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be fake. The image was digitally altered to add the moon to the original image.
Using Google Reverse Image, we discovered that the original image of the basketball hoop was uploaded to Adobe Stock Image Store. The original image does not feature any moon.
Other websites also posted the original image, which does not feature the moon.
Digitally Altered Image of the Moon
The official Twitter account of the International Basketball Federation posted the altered image on January 14, 2022, with a caption reading: βHow long until we ball on the moon?β mentioning the artistβs Instagram account: Berrak Δ°pek Tatbul.
We reviewed the Instagram account of the artist, who describes herself as an art director, and found out that she also posted the altered image on June 5, 2021, with a caption in one word: βMoonball.β
