The Claim

A video depicts a recent gas leak in a factory in Iran.

Emerging story

Social media users and news websites across the MENA region have circulated a video clip claiming it was the recent fire that erupted after a gas leak in a large industrial complex in Qom, Iran, resulting in deaths and injuries.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the claim and found that it was misleading. The video is from a fire in May 2021, not the recent explosion caused by a gas leak in an industrial complex in Qom, Iran.

Fire in a Chemical Factory

Iranian media released the video in May 2021, reporting it was from a massive blaze at the "Moldan" chemical plant, which is located in the industrial area of the northern city of Qom.

A spokesman for the Qom province firefighting organization announced hours later that the massive fire had been extinguished with no casualties.

Industrial Complex Fire in Iran

The claim started circulating after Iranian sources announced on June 28 that an explosion in a Qom industrial complex killed four and injured others.
