Viral video shows Nigerian politician fainting during a line of questioning on corruption charges.

Emerging story

A video which depicts a man fainting while appearing before a committee is going viral on social media. Users claim that the man faked fainting to avoid a line of questioning on corruption charges.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s team investigated the claim and found it to be Found it be a form of commotion that has misled people. while the incident did occur as reported by local news outlets, it is outdated as the video dates back to 2020. Moreover, despite the circumstances, there are no medical reports that prove that he faked fainting. 

Corruption Linked to Nigerian Development Project

The man in the video is A Nigerian Government official and managing director of the Niger Delta Development (NDDC), Daniel Pondei. Pondei was accused of embezzlement and mismanaging public funds and was testifying before a committee comprising of MPs and lawmakers, to probe the charges. During the line of questioning, Pondei can be seen dramatically passing out with his eyes wide open, with others rushing to his aid. The timing of the faint was very convenient in escaping the embezzlement questions. Following the whole incident, Pondei was escorted out by security personnel and later charged with stealing 536,000,000 Nigerian naira, approximately $1.28 million.

Incident of the Fainting Nigerian Politician Occurred in 2020

While the incident is true, it occurred in July 2020 and not recently.  The video resurfaced after it was shared and went viral by Twitter user Africa in Focus. The video can be seen posted on YouTube in July 2020 below.

Based on the findings, Misbar confirms that the claim is being shared to cause commotion. While the incident did occur, it happened in 2020. Moreover, there are no medical reports that conclude whether the politician fake fainted or not.
