Twitter users are circulating a video purporting to show recent protests in Havana, Cuba. While some users only shared the video with captions that call for the liberation of Cuba, a Twitter users claimed: “Havana, yesterday.”

Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading. The video dates back to 2021.
2021 Protests in Cuba: “Homeland and Life”
Misbar’s team took a still shot of a a man carrying a banner that reads, “abajo la dictadura patria y vida,” Spanish for: “down with the dictatorship homeland and life.” We used Google reverse images search to trace the history of the image. Misbar traced the image snipped from the video back to the 2021 protests in Cuba. The image of the same man carrying the same banner was used by several reliable media outlets.

July 2021 Protests in Cuba
The claim is emerging in light of the one-year anniversary of the Cuban 2021 protests. Triggered by the shortage of food and medicine in addition to the government’s weak response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, a series of protests swept Cuba in July 2021.
Based on these findings, Misbar confirms that the claim is misleading. The video dates back to 2021.
