A photo that purports to show the recent forest fires in southwestern France is making the rounds on social media across the MENA region.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and discovered it to be misleading, as the photo is old and does not depict the recent forest wildfires in France. The photo was taken in June 2021, during a massive fire in the Voula suburb of Athens, south of the Greek capital.
Last June, fires erupted in the forests on Athens' outskirts as a result of hot weather and strong winds.
Fires in Southwest France
The photo went viral after fires in southwest France destroyed over 10,000 hectares of forest. As the fires continue to spread, more than 12,000 people have been evacuated.
