Israel Did Not Mint a Shekel Coin About the 9/11 Attacks in 1968
The coin is not an Israeli Shekel coin (Twitter).

The Claim

Israel minted a Shekel coin depicting the 9/11 terrorist attacks 33 years before they occurred in 2001.

Emerging story

Social media users circulated an image claiming Israel already knew about the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 1968 when it minted a Shekel coin featuring a plane, a tank, and a symbol of the Twin Towers before the attack occurred in 2001.

A Twitter user wrote: “Did Israel mint a shekel coin 33 years before the 9/11 attacks that included images of a plane crashing into New York's World Trade Center twin towers?”

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The image does not depict a 1968 Israeli Shekel coin that shows symbols of the 9/11 attacks. However, the picture depicts a French-Israeli Six Day War Commemorative Medal.

Six Day War Commemorative Medal

Using Google Image Reverse Search, we found that the image depicts the Six Day War commemorative medal issued in 1967. According to the Israeli Decorations website, the picture features the medal's front depicting images of a plane, a tank, and the Torah that was misrepresented as the Twin towers. Meanwhile, the front depicts the flag of Israel with a sword and olive branch on either side and a variation of the French national motto (Liberty, Brotherhood, Equality) rendered here as “Freedom, Peace, Brotherhood.” The Hebrew word “Bazak” and “Under the Star of David, Campaign of 6 Days,” and the time span underneath.

Some social media users have addressed the misleading claim as it has been circulated since 2021.

The circulating image also appeared on the Cincinnati Judaica Fund and The Center For Holocaust & Humanity Education website that we checked on the Internet Archive. According to the website, the picture depicts a “French Israeli Six Day War commemorative medal,” and it was “possibly” issued by French-Jewish volunteers in the war effort (a common practice in 1948, 1967, and 1973 on the part of Jewish and non-Jewish concerned parties).
