Social media users are circulating an image of U.S. President Joe Biden holding a jerry can while on his recent visit to Saudi Arabia.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s team investigated the claim and found it to be satirical, the image is clearly digitally altered. The image is being used by some American citizens to satirically suggest that Joe Biden went to Saudi Arabia to “beg” for oil while neglecting U.S. oil producers. 

The original image was found on credible news sites, as seen below, it is clearly visible that the red jerry can was added digitally.

The GCC+3 Summit of Arab Leaders in Jeddah

The image was taken on July 16 at the GCC+3 summit of Arab leaders in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. President Biden attended the summit as part of his Middle East trip. The summit also included Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Kuwait's Crown Prince Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Jordan's King Abdullah II, Iraq's Prime Minister Mustafa Al Kadhimi and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani amongst others.

Biden Accused of “Begging” for Oil in Saudi Arabia

The image emerged following President Biden’s Middle East trip, where he visited Saudi Arabia. Critics of the President such as ​Senator Rand Paul accused him of “begging” for oil while neglecting oil producers in the U.S, as seen in the image below.

Despite the accusations, President Biden says that he is securing oil for the U.S. while also strengthening ties with Saudi Arabia.

President Biden’s Middle East Trip

On July 13, the President’s Middle East trip began with him visiting Israel, then meeting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the occupied West Bank. The trip ended on Saudi Arabia which hosted the GCC+3 summit of Arab leaders. 

Based on the findings, Misbar confirms that the digitally altered image is satirical.
