Emerging story
Social media users have recently circulated a photo purporting to show a group of Sudanese people running to their shelters after a fire broke out.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating photo and discovered it to be misleading.
After conducting a reverse image search, Misbar found that the photo is not from the recent tribal clashes in Sudan’s Blue Nile state. The photo dates back to May 19, 2011, and it depicts a fire that broke out accidentally at some shelters in Kuma Garadayat, a village located in North Darfur and controlled by members of the SLA-Free Will faction, a signatory of the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA).
Albert Gonzalez Farran captured the photo along with a collection of photos for the UN agencies. The photo was published on flickr by the photographer with details about the incident, in which he asserted that the fire broke out accidentally.
UN Agencies' Operation in Darfur
UNAMID conducted a new operation in Kuma Garadayat (North Darfur) that UN agencies, such as OCHA, UNHCR, and FAO were participating in to secure access to remote, conflict-affected areas. To assess and bring aid to areas that have been inaccessible due to conflict, UNAMID, the Office for Humanitarian Coordination, and UN humanitarian agencies were managing a series of operations dubbed “Operation Spring Basket.”
The Viral Photo From Sudan
The photo was widely circulated not only during the recent tribal clashes in Sudan’s Blue Nile state but also on several occasions concerning violent incidents during the past years from 2011 to 2022. For example Aljazeera published the same photo on April 25, 2021, in relation to violent incidents after more than 200 were killed in tribal clashes.
Photo Description: The photo used in a 2022 Aljazeera article.
2022 Sudan’s Tribal Clashes
According to a senior health official, the death toll from days of tribal clashes has climbed to at least 65 people in Sudan’s Blue Nile state.
The state’s health minister, Gamal Nasser al-Sayed, also said that around 150 injuries occurred due to the fighting between the Hausa and Birta ethnic groups in the Blue Nile state.
According to the local government, the fighting was sparked by the killing of a farmer earlier last week and continued until Saturday. Thousands of people have fled their homes since the clashes broke out.
Since the military took over after a coup in October, Sudan has witnessed ongoing clashes.
