The Claim

Shakira is going to jail.

Emerging story

Recently, social media users circulated the news that Shakira is going to jail for tax evasion.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading. Shakira has not been on trial yet.

According to the accusations, Shakira failed to pay 14.5 million euros in taxes to the Spanish government between 2012 and 2014. Spain's prosecutors requested more than eight years in prison for Shakira and a fine of 23.7 million.

Shakira rejected a deal from prosecutors this week and chose to go to trial instead.

However, contrary to the circulating claims, no referral to court or date for a trial has been officially announced.

Is Shakira Sentenced to Prison?

Shakira was accused by the public ministry of six crimes against the Public Treasury. She was accused of "using interposed legal entities," and using companies to hide her revenue accounts.

However, she has not been officially sentenced to prison. However, in the coming weeks, the court of Esplugues de Llobregat in Barcelona, which investigated the facts, will issue an order to open an oral trial.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, Shakira avoided paying 14.5 million euros in taxes (income and assets) between 2012 and 2014.

Shakira, on the other hand, insisted on having a legal residence in the Bahamas and denied having been a resident of Spain at the time.

Yet, the Spanish Tax Agency revealed that Shakira spent more than 183 days in Spain, which is the legal requirement for her to be considered a tax resident in the country.

The accusations were based on information gathered by Tax Agency inspectors who followed Shakira's daily activities, which included going to hair and beauty salons and renting a recording studio close to Barcelona.

Shakira Denies Allegations

According to Shakira's PR firm, Llorente y Cuenca, the singer chose to go to trial because she sees the case as a "total violation of her rights."

Shakira has always met all of her tax obligations, according to a statement from her media team.

"The singer is fully confident in her innocence and does not accept a settlement," the statement revealed.

Shakira says she paid 17.2 million, which the Spanish tax office claimed she owed, so she has no debts to the tax authorities.

Social Media Users React to Shakira’s Tax-Fraud Allegations

Hundreds of people on social media reacted to Shakira's accusation.

Some have circulated gifs displaying how they plan to break into the Spanish jail and free her.

Others joked that she could escape from prison by using her dancing skills.

The hashtag #WeStandWithShakira was used by Shakira's supporters to denounce the Spanish government's accusations.
