Scientific Illustration Shared as a Detailed Image of a Human Cell
The Claim
This is a detailed image of a human cell.
Emerging story
A viral photo is alleged to be a detailed image of a human cell.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading. The image is a scientific illustration of a eukaryotic cell.
Cellular Landscape by Evan Ingersoll and Gael McGill
After conducting a reverse image search on Google, Misbar found that the image is a 3D digital illustration of a eukaryotic cell.
The illustration was designed by Evan Ingersoll and Dr. Gaël McGill, the Director of Molecular Visualization at the Center for Molecular and Cellular Dynamics at Harvard Medical School. The scientific visualization researcher and artists explained his approach in the description of the photo he shared on ArtStation: “Created for Cell Signaling Technology, Inc., and inspired by the stunning art of David Goodsell, this 3D rendering of a eukaryotic cell is modeled using X-ray, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and cryo-electron microscopy datasets for all of its molecular actors.”
The illustration is also shared on the interactive platform “Digizyme.”
Misbar found that the photo was originally designed back in 2015.
The illustration was exhibited by Johns Hopkins University on January 20, 2020.
