Emerging story
Websites and social media users have recently circulated posts claiming that Pelé is dead.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be fake. The Brazilian Football Confederation did not announce the death of Pelé. Misbar’s team conducted an advanced Google search using the claim’s keywords, but the process did not reveal any reliable sources confirming the footballer’s death.
Moreover, the claim alleges that Pelé died at 75 years of age. However, Pelé is 81 years old, he was born on October 23, 1940.
Pelé Hospitalized for Tumor Treatment
The claim began to circulate after media outlets raised concern about Pelé’s deteriorating health after he was hospitalized in Sao Paulo in January 2022 as part of his treatment for colon cancer. However, Pelé’s daughter denied the claims about her father’s unstable health situation.
Later in February, Pelé’s son said his father was depressed because of his poor health and reluctant to leave the house because he could not walk without assistance. According to Reuters, Pelé suffered from hip trouble for years, and many of his recent public appearances have been in a wheelchair.
“He’s pretty fragile. He had a hip replacement and didn’t have an adequate or ideal rehabilitation,” his son told the Brazilian TV channel, TV Globo, in February 2022.
Who Is Pelé?
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, widely known as Pelé, is considered to be one of the most prominent footballers in history. The football star began his football career with the Brazilian national team, winner of three World Cup championships, and received many awards. According to Britannica, the star published several best-selling autobiographies, starred in several successful documentary and semi-documentary films, and composed many musical pieces.
Misleading Claims Target Pelé
The claim that Pelé died have circulated several times in the past. In 2019, Facebook users shared baseless claims purporting that the football star died, but no official reports confirmed the claim.
Social media users also shared a picture claiming it depicts Pelé in front of Maradona’s grave. The users purported the photograph was taken at the family cemetery in the Argentinian capital just before burying the football star. Misbar’s Arabic team addressed the claim and confirmed that the image was fabricated and did not feature Edson Arantes do Nascimento.
