Old Photos Shared as Recent UAE Aid for Sudan’s Flood Victims
The photo was taken in April 2020 (Twitter).

The Claim

Photos show the humanitarian aid donated by the UAE to Sudan in the wake of the floods.

Emerging story

Photos purporting to show the United Arab Emirates humanitarian aid plane to Sudan after the floods have been circulating online.

From multiple angles, the images show two employees packing boxes in front of an airplane.

According to some users, the UAE sent 350 tonnes of food and medical supplies to Sudan.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar found the circulating photos misleading.

The circulating photos are unrelated and predate the recent Sudan floods.

UAE Supports Sudan Amid COVID-19

Two photos recently circulating depict a UAE aircraft dispatched to Sudan with medical supplies in April 2020.

UAE Sends Food Aid to Gambia

Another photo circulating with a misleading claim was cropped from a video of a UAE humanitarian aid plane earlier this year.

On February 28, 2022, the UAE dispatched an aid plane carrying 48 tons of basic food supplies to The Gambia. This was part of its ongoing effort to improve the humanitarian situation and living standards in many countries.

UAE Aids Sudan’s Flood Victims With $6.8 Million

The photos began to circulate after the UAE President ordered immediate aid to flood victims in Sudan.

On Saturday, President Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates ordered the delivery of AED25 million ($6.8 million) in humanitarian aid to the people of Sudan who have been impacted by the recent torrential rains and floods.

According to Emirates News Agency, the aid will alleviate the suffering of those affected by the floods and improve their living conditions.

The aid is an expression of the UAE's solidarity with the people of Sudan, according to the news agency.

Sudan Floods

Seasonal rains in Sudan cause rivers to overflow, causing flooding and death.

According to a spokesman for Sudan's National Civil Defence Council, the death toll from rain and floods in the country has risen to 83 since the rainy season began in May.

The provinces most affected by the seasonal rains are North Kordofan, Gezira, South Kordofan, South Darfur, and the Nile.

According to reports, the flood disaster has affected 25,000-30,000 people and has completely submerged nine villages.

Sudan experiences annual floods. Large-scale destruction of homes, businesses, and farms is caused by floods every year as a result of the nation's frequent, intense torrential rain, which occurs between May and October.

Misbar's team, however, debunked a number of misleading and outdated photos that purported to depict this year's floods in Sudan.
