This video shows a Russian soldier recording himself as he cries in Kherson, Ukraine.

Emerging story

Social media users have widely circulated a video purporting to show a Russian Soldier recording a message to his loved ones, while crying. The soldier is alleged to be based in Kherson, Ukraine. Some users claim that the soldier is telling his parents that he loves them. Others shared a caption that reads: “Shouldn’t have invaded Ukraine.”

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading. The video dates back to 2019 and shows a Kazakh soldier based in Arys, Kazakhstan. 

Misbar’s team found several videos shared in 2019 with titles and descriptions explaining that the video was recorded by a Kazakh soldier during a blast near the Arys military base in Kazakhstan. 

 

 

Munitions Depot Blast in Kazakhstan 

On June 24, 2019, explosions at a munitions depot near the town of Arys, Kazakhstan led to the death of one person and the injury of dozens. The causes of the explosion were not revealed. According to Reuters, similar incidents occurred in 2009, 2014, 2015.

Heavy Clashes in Kherson, Ukraine

There are several reports of heavy clashes between Ukrainian and Russian soldiers in Kherson. According to Reuters, Vitaliy Kim, governor of the Mykolaiv region told Ukrainian TV: "Heavy fighting is going on. Our military is working around the clock. Liberation of the Kherson region is coming soon."

In a newly released video, the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Russian soldiers to flee for their lives after he launched attacks to reseize Southern Ukraine.
