The video shows the Saudi Defense Minister arriving at the Chinese Embassy in Riyadh, to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Emerging story

Social media users have recently widely circulated a video purporting to show the Saudi Defense Minister arriving at the Chinese Embassy in Riyadh, to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The video is alleged to show security guards rushing someone in response to the sound of fireworks.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading. The video dates back to 2019 and was taken in Kuwait. 

Upon conducting a reverse image search of a still shot from the video, Misbar’s team found that the video was shared on Instagram the Kuwait Army official Instagram account back in 2019. The descriptive caption reads: “Part of the Amiri Guard’s display that was carried out during the 5th Gulf Defense and Aviation Exhibition, which was held during the period from 10 to 12 December 2019 at the Mishref fairground.”

Moreover, the Chinese New Year celebrations will not take place before January 22, 2023.
