Emerging story
A video purportedly showing the recent typhoon Hinnamnor hitting South Korea is circulating on social media.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be misleading.
The footage is old and unrelated to Typhoon Hinnamnor in South Korea.
Video Is From Japan, Not South Korea
The 35-minute video combines multiple clips, according to our team. The first video depicts a violent storm crashing down on rooftops and sending debris flying over a residential area. The second video shows flying wreckage above a parking lot.
Using TinEye and Google Image Reverse Search, we discovered that the clips had previously circulated in 2018.
Our team found the first footage of a storm sweeping roofs online in September 2018, attached to articles on Typhoon Jebi in Japan.
In 2019, the footage was also uploaded to other websites with a different claim.
A screenshot from the footage was featured in an article published on September 8, 2018. The website reported a typhoon hitting Japan in 2018 and the Chinese rescue forces’ intervention to help the Chinese passengers trapped in Japan’s closed airports.
Photo Description: A screenshot from the footage was uploaded online in 2018.
The clip also appeared in a longer compilation video of heavy storms posted on the Bilibili video-streaming platform in October 2018.
Typhoon Jebi Hit Japan in 2018
Typhoon Jebi blasted into Japan's western coast in September 2018, bringing the strongest winds and rainfall in a quarter-century. DW reported that residents in affected areas, including Kobe and Osaka, were ordered to evacuate.
The Guardian reported at least even people died, and more than 100 others were injured when Typhoon Jebi caused violent winds in the west of the country. “The storm is the strongest to hit the country in 25 years.”
Several vehicles were blown onto their sides on a highway, and a truck narrowly avoided being swept off a bridge connecting the Japanese islands of Shikoku and Honshu.
Typhoon Hinnamnor Strucks South Korea
Typhoon Hinnamnor hit South Korean southern industrial hubs on September 6, 2022, killing at least ten people and displacing thousands, according to CNN.
According to the report, seven people were killed when rising waters trapped them in a submerged parking lot in the southeastern port city of Pohang.
Heavy storms hit with wind speeds equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane, with winds over 15 4 kilometers per hour or a little over 95 miles per hour. The Typhoon made landfall battering the southeastern industrial cities with strong wind and heavy rain, around 4:50 a.m. local time.
Shocking videos of storms and heavy rain attributed to South Korea started circulating online. However, based on the findings, Misbar confirms that the video circulating is old and unrelated to Typhoon Hinnamnor hitting South Kora.
