What Is Arbaeen?
Arbaeen is recognized as the world's largest annual gathering of Shiite Muslims.
The Arbaeen ritual commemorates the end of the 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed. Arbaeen is an important religious occasion for Shia Muslims, drawing thousands of worshippers to the city of Iraq's holy city of Karbala.
Imam Hussein and his family members were killed in a battle at Karbala in the 7th century.
