A video purporting to show Muslim migrants protesting in Sweden has gone viral on social media. According to users who shared the video, women with young children came forward to avoid police action.
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it misleading.
The video does not show migrant Muslims protesting in Malmo, Sweden, during the election season.
Arbaeen Commemoration Ceremony
The circulating video was published on YouTube on September 10, 2022, by AA Media Production. The footage was taken in Malmo, Sweden, during the Arbaeen, a yearly pilgrimage for Shiite Muslims.
Misbar found a similar video on Twitter with the caption "3,000 Shia Muslims marching through Malmo prior to elections to commemorate Imam Hussein."
The video was recorded on September 10, prior to the elections in Sweden on September 11, 2022.
What Is Arbaeen?
Arbaeen is recognized as the world's largest annual gathering of Shiite Muslims.
The Arbaeen ritual commemorates the end of the 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed. Arbaeen is an important religious occasion for Shia Muslims, drawing thousands of worshippers to the city of Iraq's holy city of Karbala.
Imam Hussein and his family members were killed in a battle at Karbala in the 7th century.
2022 General Elections in Sweden
On September 11, 2022, Sweden held its legislative election.
The right-wing opposition was set to win 176 of the 349 seats in the Swedish parliament with over 99 percent of districts counted.
Following the election victory of the right-wing opposition, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson announced that she would resign on Thursday. However, she declared that she will continue to lead the Social Democrats.
Furthermore, the final result had not been verified as of the writing of this article.
According to Misbar's findings, the video was shot recently in Sweden but is unrelated to the Swedish elections.
