Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading.

The Assaulted Man Is Not the Iranian Ambassador

The video does not depict the Iranian Ambassador to the United Kingdom being beaten by protesters. The original video shows an intelligence officer accused of taking pictures of Iranian protesters in the streets of London.

The Persian Independent posted another version of the video, shot from a different angle, on September 25 with a caption written in Persian. The English translation reads, "According to one of the videos posted on social media, protesters clashed against the Islamic Republic and its supporters in London. One of the videos shows protesters attacking an Iranian intelligence agent and beating him."

Protests in support of Iran Protests

The largest anti-government demonstrations in Iran since 2009 gathered momentum on Saturday. As the protests multiplied, the government has arrested prominent activists and journalists. Dozens of people were also reported dead.

Human rights advocates and Iranian diaspora groups have organized unprecedented anti-Islamic Republic protests in more than 150 cities worldwide.

The global protests were organized by Hamed Esmaeilion, a Canadian activist whose daughter and wife were murdered by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The protests began in Australia, New Zealand, and East Asia, followed by cities in Europe and in America.

Since the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman whose murder at the hands of morality police prompted an uprising, many Iranians, both inside Iran and in the diaspora, have been participating in regular rallies.
