Social media users recently shared a video purportedly showing the Kerch bridge explosion on October 8, 2022.
The alleged explosion video of the Crimea-Russia bridge Kerch has gone viral in multiple languages.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading.
The video clip is outdated and unrelated to the Saturday bombing of the Kerch bridge, which connects Crimea and Russia. Russian news agencies published it in May 2021.
In the midst of disputing the veracity of the bombing of the bridge, there were conflicting reports claiming that a missile did not target the bridge.
Contrary to the widely-circulated clip, Saturday night's explosion—which was caused by a truck bomb— took place at night.
In May, a video claimed the Kerch bridge was bombed by Ukraine, but Russian authorities said it was fake and a work of art.
The video is "fake Ukrainian propaganda," according to Oleg Kryuchko, a counselor to the president of Crimea. Although Misbar was unable to confirm the video's origin, it is old and not from the most recent explosion of the bridge.
The Crimean Bridge Explosion
The claim began after a fuel tanker exploded on the Kerch bridge in 2014, killing three people.
The Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee reported that a truck explosion on a paved road from the Crimean bridge to the Taman Peninsula exploded seven fuel tankers on a train headed for Crimea at 6:07 a.m.
The bridge was built after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. It parallels two roads, one for cars and the other for a railroad.
