Emerging story
A photo alleged to be a 3D reconstruction of the first human being’s face has gone viral online. According to users who shared the claim, “Scientists at Princeton University have reconstructed this 3D model of how Adam, the first human being created by God.”
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be satirical.
There is no evidence to suggest that Princeton University is conducting any similar research.
The account that first shared the image added a tweet clarifying that the claim is nothing but a joke.
Many users noticed the striking similarity between the man in the circulating image and the American actor Vin Diesel.
However, some users believed the claim to be true and interacted with it accordingly.
DNA Based 3D Facial Reconstruction
DNA is helping researchers and scientists to reconstruct the faces of people who have died thousands of years ago. In 2021, scientists used genetic information sampled from three ancient Egyptian mummies to generate digital facial reconstructions that show what the men might have looked like at age 25.
The Smithsonian Hall of Human Origins also displays an impressive collection of artistic facial reconstructions of Neanderthals, as can be seen below.
Photo Description: Homo neanderthalensis, adult male. Reconstruction based on Shanidar 1 (artist, John Gurche).
