Social media users from the MENA region recently shared a video purporting that an Iranian journalist shaved her head after Saudi Arabia won the match against Argentina.
According to the claim, the journalist pledged to shave her hair if Saudi Arabia beat Argentina in the 2022 World Cup.
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading.
The video was taken last October during the recent wave of protests in Iran.
2022 Protests in Iran
Amid the wave of protests across Iran, many Iranian women cut and shaved their hair to symbolically protest the laws of compulsory hijab for women. The protests spread across the country in honor of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested and killed for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic's modesty laws. The Iranian government claimed that it was not responsible for Amini’s death.
