Emerging story
An image of the Cairo Tower lit up with the Moroccan flag has surfaced on the internet.
Users claimed the image depicts the tower lit up with the Moroccan flag after the Moroccan football team defeated Spain in the World Cup Qatar 2022.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be misleading.
The image is old and does not show the Cairo Tower illuminated with the Moroccan flag following Morocco vs. Spain’s last match at the World Cup in Qatar.
A reverse image search revealed that the picture was posted online in 2018.
The image was widely circulated in 2018 on social media as the Moroccan team was participating in the World Cup 2018 in Russia.
Does the Image Show the Moroccan Flag on Cairo Tower?
After the image surfaced in 2018 and on other occasions, social media users noticed that the tower was not lit up with the Moroccan flag as claimed.
However, the tower was illuminated in June 2018 with Birell Egypt’s logo in red and green, similar to the Moroccan flag colors.
The company displayed its slogan on the tower and wrote in a Facebook post: “Birell illuminates Cairo Tower with the slogan of the new campaign ‘This season is for football only.’”
Morocco vs. Spain
The image went viral after the Moroccan football team defeated Spain on December 6, on penalties to reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup Qatar 2022.
Following a draw with Croatia in the opening group match, Morocco went on to defeat Belgium (2-0) and Canada (2-1).
According to Morocco World News, it has been 36 years since Morocco last qualified for the round of 16.
