Emerging story
Social media users have circulated a video claiming that it depicts violent protests in Jordan following fuel prices and tax increases.
“Violent Protests are taking place around #Jordan. Citizens went out to the streets to protest against difficult economic conditions,” a Twitter user wrote.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be misleading.
The video is outdated and unrelated to the most recent protests in Jordan.
2019 Jordan Protests
The video was already posted to YouTube in August 2019.
It depicts violent clashes between protesters and security forces in Ramtha, northern Jordan.
According to the source, the city of Ramtha witnessed violent clashes between several protestors and Jordanian security forces. Demonstrators were burning tires, while authorities sent reinforcements and used tear gas to disperse the protesters.
2022 Jordan Protests
Days after riots in the southern city of Maan left one police officer dead, Jordanian activists called for more protests against fuel prices and tax increases making the cost of living rise, according to Al Jazeera.
Jordan’s King Abdullah II extended condolences to the policeman's family.
“We will not tolerate violence against our security personnel, who work day and night to protect Jordan and Jordanians,” said the King .
The claim surfaced after truck drivers and various means of transportation went on a strike for more than a week against a governmental decision to raise fuel prices.
Along the same lines, interior minister Mazen Farrayeh said that the government “will apply tough steps and redeploy more anti-riot police against demonstrators who protest violently.”
Efforts were made to end the crisis, including a deal to end a 17-day strike by truck drivers.
Following this deal, the drivers agreed to evacuate the main highways and get back to work under a pledge that their demands would be met.
