Social media users from the MENA region shared a claim purporting that FIFA withdrew the Golden Glove award from the Argentine Emiliano Martinez.
According to the claim, FIFA gave the award to the Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou instead.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be fake. FIFA did not announce withdrawing the award from Emiliano Martinez.
The FIFA website does not have recent news regarding the award, nor did it announce any penalties against the Argentine goalkeeper.
Misbar’s team found that the news of Martinez's Golden Glove Award is still available on the FIFA website, as can be seen below.
Emiliano Martinez Slammed After Controversial Celebration
After winning the Golden Glove award, Martinez celebrated by making a lewd gesture. Martinez has since explained he made the gesture because French fans were booing him.
French media has described Martinez as “the most hated Argentine.”
The French congressman Karl Olive has suggested that Martinez should be stripped of the Golden Glove award for the incident.
Patrick Vieira, a World Cup winner with France in 1998, was also unimpressed by Martinez's gesture.
"Some of the pictures I saw from the Argentinian goalkeeper, I think, take away a little bit what Argentina achieved at the World Cup," said Vieira.
