Emerging story
Twitter users have shared an image of long traffic lanes following the recent traffic accidents in China.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The image dates back to October 2015.
News outlets posted the image in 2015 and said it shows 50 traffic lanes. According to Buzzfeed News, these “terrifying traffic jam” scenes happened in China when millions of people were returning from holidays and trying to get back to Beijing.
According to WPTV, the scenes happened on the final day of “the Golden Week, a seven-day holiday which Chinese citizens often use for travel.”
Chinese social media users and pages also circulated the image back then and claimed it was taken on October 6, 2015.
The Recent Traffic Accidents in China
The image surfaced again in 2023 following recent traffic accidents in China. On December 28, 2022, nearly 300 vehicles crashed in a massive pileup on a foggy bridge in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou, China, killing one person and leaving others injured.
On January 8, 2023, nineteen people died, and 20 were injured in eastern China after a truck ran through a funeral procession early Sunday, Reuters reported from Chinese media.
Following the incident, which happened in eastern China’s Jiangxi province, an investigation was underway, global media reported citing local news outlets.
