Emerging story
Social media users circulated a photo that was allegedly taken in Dubai recently during a meeting between Manchester United's owners and Dubai investors willing to take over the club.
“Manchester United F.C. has been sold,” a Twitter user wrote. “Dubai is cooking!” he stated. “THE TAKE OVER IS COMPLETE!!!,” he concluded.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The image is outdated and has nothing to do with the buyout of the football club.
An Old Image Resurfaced
Misbar’s team discovered that the image dates back to March 2022 when Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed, met with Avram Glazer to discuss ways of cooperation to raise Dubai’s profile as “a global sporting hub.”
“I met with Avram Glazer, Co-Chairman of Manchester United, today and discussed ways to work together to further raise Dubai’s profile as a global sporting hub. We also discussed the UAE T20 Cricket league’s launch in Jan 2023 featuring the Manchester United cricket team & other teams,” Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed tweeted.
Manchester United FC Open for Takeover
According to media outlets, Manchester United’s owners had put the club up for sale seeking strategic alternatives for investment.
The club’s majority owner, the American Glazer family, has had a “tumultuous relationship with fans” since gaining a controlling stake in 2005 for 790 million pounds sterling in a controversial, highly leveraged deal that added a substantial debt pile to the club, news outlets reported.
Although reports stated that Dubai investors were on “red alert” after the Glazer family opened the club for takeover, there is no proof Dubai Sports Council is seeking to buy the club, following protests against the Glazer family owning the club.
Misbar has previously debunked rumors claiming thatElon Musk was buying the English football club Manchester United. The claim turned out to be satirical and surfaced after Musk tweeted about taking over the club.
