Emerging story
Twitter users have circulated an image purporting that it shows a Yemeni child who passed away after a Saudi missile attack.
“Among the war crimes on #Yemen: a Saudi missile embracing a Yemeni child,” a Twitter user wrote. “Did you know that this thing is a Yemeni child that was hit by a Saudi missile?” they asked.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The image is old and does not feature a Yemeni child hit by a Saudi missile.
The Image Features a Syrian Child Hit by a Missile
Using Reverse Image Search, Misbar's team discovered that the image dates back to 2015. It shows a Syrian child killed by a missile that struck his family’s house in Aleppo, northern Syria.
According to local news outlets, the father lost eight of his family members during the attack carried out by the Assad regime planes in the town of Hayyan, located in the northern countryside of Aleppo.
The child, Yusuf Hayek, died after being trapped between the barrel bomb and the roof of the house, which collapsed due to the explosion.
The father, who arrived at the scene, had a nervous breakdown when he learned that the house was destroyed and everyone in it was dead.
“The grieving father only wanted to see the corpse of his five-year-old son trapped in the attic by the bomb,” Al Jazeera Turk reported.
Reports of an Attack that Left Yemeni Children Casualties
The claim surfaced after local news outlets reported an attack by the Saudi-American forces in Al-Sharjah Yemeni village killing three children and leaving another child injured.
According to the Al-Masirah news outlet, which is backed by the Houthis, the incident occurred on January 24, 2023, in the village of Al-Sharjah in the Al-Jarrahi district. However, this circulating image is not recent and does not feature a Yemeni kid.
