Emerging story
Social media users recently widely shared a claim purporting that the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, renamed “Al Minhad” to “Hind City” to honor the contribution of India and Hindus towards humanity.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be selective. Whereas the ruler of Dubai renamed the area to “Hind City,” nothing confirms that it was renamed to honor India and Hindus.
Misbar’s team found that the official statement announcing the new name did not mention India or Hindus. The statement can be seen below.
Some internet users have also suggested that “Hind” is a common old Arabic name, which might be the reason behind renaming the area.
Others mentioned that Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's senior wife's name is Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum.
However, no official or reliable sources have explained the rationale behind the new name of the area.
“Hind City” in Dubai
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE issued an order to rename the Al Minhad area and its surrounding as “Hind City.”
The city includes four zones—Hind 1, Hind 2, Hind 3, and Hind 4—and spans an area of 83.9km.
This is not an unprecedented renaming of a major area. The tallest building, “Burj Khalifa,” was earlier known as “Burj Dubai.”
